What to See in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Where should you start your visit?

The natural starting point is Vegueta, the city's founding neighbourhood, with Plaza de Santa Ana at its heart. There stands the Cathedral, guarded by its famous bronze dogs, and just steps away the Casa de Colón, which recreates Columbus' stay on the island before his voyage to America.

From Vegueta you cross on foot into Triana, a lively commercial and modernist neighbourhood with pedestrian streets full of shops and architecture with carved wooden balconies. It's a flat, comfortable walk, perfect to enjoy at an easy pace in a couple of hours.

Is Playa de Las Canteras worth it?

Yes, it's one of the city's defining features: almost three kilometres of golden sand right in the city centre, with a natural rock barrier that calms the waves along most of its length. You can stroll the promenade, swim, or simply sit and watch the sunset over the Atlantic.

Nearby, on the La Isleta peninsula, lies El Confital, a wilder and lesser-known spot with volcanic cliffs and turquoise waters, ideal if you're after something quieter and more natural.

How much time do you need to see the city?

A full day is enough to see the essentials of Vegueta, Triana and Las Canteras. If you have two or three days, I'd recommend adding an excursion into the island, such as the Viera y Clavijo Botanical Garden or a trip up to the highlands, since Gran Canaria offers much more beyond the capital.
