Vegueta & Triana: How to Visit the Old Town
· Aurora María

Vegueta and Triana can be visited on foot in a comfortable, flat route of about two hours, starting at Plaza de Santa Ana and ending in the lively commercial streets of Triana. They are the two oldest neighbourhoods of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, founded in 1478, and hold most of the city's historic heritage. Here's how to plan the walk.
What can you see in Vegueta?
Vegueta is the neighbourhood where the city was born. Its heart is Plaza de Santa Ana, presided over by the Cathedral and watched over by its famous bronze dogs. A few steps away is the Casa de Colón, which recalls Columbus' stay on the island before setting sail for America.
Its stone streets preserve colonial architecture with carved wooden balconies, witnesses of a city that for centuries was a stopover port between continents and suffered attacks from legendary corsairs.
How is Triana different?
Crossing the old bed of the Guiniguada ravine you reach Triana, a more commercial and modernist neighbourhood, with pedestrian streets full of shops, cafés and early 20th-century buildings. It has a livelier, more literary pulse, quite different from the monumental atmosphere of Vegueta.
How long does the route take and is it for everyone?
The full walk takes around two hours, is flat and comfortable, making it ideal for families and seniors. No special physical preparation is needed — just curiosity about the city's history.
